Yeastie Boys Cloudbuster New Zealand Saison Moderne 5.8% abv.
The craft beer revolution arrived in New Zealand in the early 1990s but did not appear to be sustainable with many small breweries closing but the tide has been reversed and this isolated country at the other end of the world now has around 140 independent breweries. New Zealand is a long way from anywhere so it makes sense for the country to brew as much of its own beer as possible. New Zealand is also a major hop growing nation with many type of local hops giving its beers a distinct flavour.
Cloudbuster comes all the way from New Zealand and it certainly has been worth the journey. This is a delicious beer which pours a cloudy dark orange colour with a big head which recedes after a while. It has a good citrus aroma with a fresh tart lemony/peachy flavour. It is very different from the grapefruity American Pale Ale styles which tend to dominate our bottle shops. This is a beer which could well compliment a curry which I think is the most difficult of foods to match with a beer. It is also an easy drinking beer which would be very refreshing on a hot summer’s day. Cloudbuster is hopped with Nelson Sauvignon , Wakattu and Sorachi hops.
The Yeasty Boys are Stu, Sam and Zane who are based in Wellington and started brewing in 2009. Their beers are brewed to their specifications at Invercargill Brewery which is located at the very southernmost end of South Island. Other Yeasty Boys beers include Porter, IPA, Rye, White and a Peat smoked ale. Some Yeasty Boys beers are also brewed by Beerdog in Scotland. The beers are quite widely available in the UK along with other New Zealand brewers such as 8 Wired, Tua Tara, Three Boys and Renaissance.
Saison beers originated in Belgium as farmhouse beers which were brewed in the springtime for drinking in the summer when brewing would not have been possible. The term literally means “seasonal”. Saisons are usually pale, citrusy beers but the style is open to a wide range of interpretations. There are many Belgian Saisons around and US brewers have also experimented with this style of beer.
The name Yeasty Boys is a play on the name of the favourite band of the founders, the Beastie Boys. This US Hip Hop band started in 1980 and became one of the most long-lived hip hop acts. Pour yourself a refreshing glass of Cloudbuster and listen to one of their best known songs, a sentiment beloved by all Carouser readers; You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party. This record was their first UK hit and got to No 11 in the UK singles charts in 1987.
