After 12 years of waiting, it was starting to look likely that the Freddie Mercury biopic might bite the dust. From lead character changes to a load of rumours, it was hard to know what was fact and what was fiction.
A recent rumour was reported by Deadline. Mike Myers (Austin Powers, Wayne’s World) is allegedly in talks to join the production. There has been no confirmation of who he might play in the upcoming biopic due to them still discussing. Many remember Myers for bringing back ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in the ’90s movie Wayne’s World.
“Queen, at that point, not by me and not by hardcore fans, but the public had sort of forgotten about them,” Myers recalled in a 2014 interview. “Freddie had gotten sick, the last time we had seen them was on Live Aid and then there were a few albums after where they were sort of straying away from their arena-rock roots. But I always loved ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ I thought it was a masterpiece. So I fought really, really hard for it. And at one point I said, ‘Well, I’m out. I don’t want to make this movie if it’s not ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’”
But thankfully, a leaked video of a recreation of Live Aid and a photo release (above) of Rumi Malek as Freddie confirms that the show will go on. The cast currently includes Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Gwilym Lee as Brian May, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor and Joe Mazello as John Deacon. Lucy Boynton is to play Freddie’s ‘Love Of My Life’ muse Mary Austin. The film is being overseen and co-produced by bandmates Roger Taylor and Brian May.
In 2010, Sasha Baron Cohen was announced to play the part of Freddie. But after what seemed like a nasty fall out, Cohen walked away from the role and stated in a radio conversation that “no one is going to see a movie where the lead character dies of AIDS and the band carries on.”
Recently, it was announced that the film will chronicle from 1970 till their Live Aid performance in 1985. Brian Singer, who directed the superheroes movies X Men and Superman Returns, is the director. Screenwriter and novelist Justin Haythe wrote the script for the movie. His repertoire includes the screenplay for the adaptation of Richard Yates’ Revolutiony Road.
Still, we have to wait a little while longer. The Freddie Mercury Biopic will be out 25th December 2018. What do you think so far? Let us know in the comments below.
