The Half Moon, Putney, London SW15
I’m never quite sure what to make of this place in drinking terms. Sure, it’s probably still my favourite live venue in London, with a superb riverside location, cashpoint and supermarket next door, a warm atmosphere, inviting decor (OK, a bit gastro in the front bar, but still cosily rock’n’roll in the actual venue) and a great selection of bands. But it has to be said that I’ve often found the staff, comprised as they most probably are of Twickenham and Roehampton Uni students trying to top up their grants with a bit of pocket money, a little on the surly side. In fact, some are downright rude!!
Nonetheless, the selection of beers on offer is more than pleasing, and the double special occasion of both remembering the departed Mr Parfitt and ringing in the incoming New Year meant I indulged in two or three festive doses of real ale, something they can usually be relied to keep in fine order. That said, I’ll be buggered if I can remember what they were- but I know they were reasonably priced for this end of town. Spirits, mind you, may differ- I do have recollections of my ex paying through the nose for a Malibu, and that was five years ago, so one can only surmise what it costs now.
To be on the safe side, I’ll give it a 7 and a half out of ten OK, seeing as they always seem to look after their bogs well and they have a beautiful beer garden, I’ll bump it up to eight. I will say, however, that at the moment, the website details are a bit of a mess- though they promise they’re in the middle of revamping it, it’s extremely difficult to tell at the moment whether you’re emailing the office or the bar. Which, naturally, also goes for their sister venue the Bulls Head (Barnes) Still, I know they’re currently “under new management”, as it were, so time will tell…
