Mainzer Str. 15, 10247 Berlin, Germany
Ever wanted to meet a German man who models his entire look on Judas Priest’s Rob Halford? No? Me neither. However, it seems Rockcafé, Halford in Berlin has a lot to offer rock and heavy metal fans alike.
The bar is not easy to find, but that is probably because I’m a wobbly, drunk Londoner full of currywurst. After a long walk, seeing the familiar font displaying the words ‘Halford’ from outside gives a warm welcome; but to my disappointment, the pub is shut. Realising that the pub opens at a very late 7pm on a Saturday, we go for a drink in a nearby bar.
Finally ready to get Unleashed in East Berlin, I step inside Rockcafe, Halford. The bar is exactly what I expect. The interior is dark, seedy and covered with heavy metal memorabilia. The type of décor you would expect from a bar worshiping Rock God Rob Halford. As you enter, you are greeted by a giant statue of Halford himself. Donned in studs and leather and ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ into the humongous microphone. It’s so iconic that Judas Priest fans travel far and wide just to have their photo taken with the Halford sculpture.
The music being played is very low, although the pub is already packed. I can almost hear Iron Maiden’s ‘The Evil That Men Do’ in the background. The atmosphere could have been lifted by increasing the volume of the music and therefore the Saturday night vibe. Regardless, I find a very cosy table in the corner and sit with a jug of ‘Motorhead’ and a Weihenstephaner.
The bar has a fantastic selection of bottled and draught pilsners and wheat beers on offer. All at a very reasonable price. The speciality however, has to be the heavy metal cocktails they are serving. Deliciously made and named after some of the biggest acts in heavy metal. From only 4.50€, you can’t complain. Additionally, they have a variety of drinks deals available. Including The Tequila Party where you buy 4 tequilas and get 1 free… who can resist?
Visiting Rockcafe, Halford when in Berlin is a must. Owner, and Halford enthusiast, Sven, is doing a fantastic job ‘Delivering the Goods’ to Judas Priest fans from all over the world. It’s not every day you get to drink good quality beers in a heavy metal establishment. Just turn the music up a bit, will ya?
