Audie Rick portrays a five-year-old John throughout the first season. James Badge Dale assumed the job for the most recent season.
John’s brother, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar), was born to James and Margaret; he was their second child. Before Emma and John’s baby Jack, Spencer was born.

Emma Dutton is portrayed by Marley Shelton in 1923.
The 48-year-old American actress has appeared in films including Scream (Sheriff Judy Hicks), Rampage (Dr. Kerry Atkins), Solace (Laura Merriwether), W (Fran), Planet Terror (Dr. Dakota Block), Bubble Boy (Chloe), Valentine (Kate Davies), Never Been Kissed (Kristin), and Uptown Girls (Kristin) are the actors (Ingrid).
In contrast, she has appeared on television in parts such as Hannah Gray in Manhunt: Unabomber, Gail Mazzucchelli in Rise, Dr. Alison Lennon in The Lottery, and Eleventh Hour (Rachel Young).

In a Recent Interview with Looper, Marley discussed 1923 and discussed the bond between Emma and her mother-in-law Cara, portrayed by Helen Mirren:
“Because I don’t know a better one. When their men go on cattle drives, which are a big part of their lives, it’s these two women who run the show and literally hold down the fort… I also think that having that structure helps them.”
She went on to say, “It stops them from being lonely and scared that their men might never come back… You have to live not knowing if they’ll ever come back or not. In light of this, I believe the two women share a common bond as a result of their shared experiences.”

In July 2001, Marley Shelton married Beau Flynn. In 2000, they met on the set of Bubble Boy, which Beau was making.
Their first child, West Flynn, was born on September 6, 2009, and their second child, Ruby Jeanne Flynn, was born on May 1, 2012.
Shelton dated actor Nicholas Brendon when she was in school. On their prom date, Brenton gave Shelton 100 roses and drove a black Mustang convertible to impress her.
