Warning: Spoilers For The Season 5 premiere of Yellowstone Are Ahead!
Yellowstone, a hit show on Paramount Network, is back for a fifth season, and the two-hour premiere not only brought back the Dutton family but also introduced a lot of new characters and brought back cameos from past episodes.
In the debut episode of Season 5, “One Hundred Years Is Nothing,” John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is sworn in as governor, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) face another tragedy, and Jamie (Wes Bentley) finds his place in Montana’s new political environment. We also check in on Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser), who just got married, and see flashbacks of their past.
Rip and Beth are teenagers when we see them the day before Beth goes to college to study finance. She asks to Rip out on a date, and when they go to a bar, she leads the conversation. She asks for a martini, and when the bartender asks for ID, she leans forward and says, “I have two.”
The bartender tells Rip, who is clearly bothered by Beth’s actions, that he is busy. When he leaves to make the drink, Beth and Rip fight. Rip gives her the keys and goes home, where he waits for her to come back. But when another ranch worker takes her home, she kisses him in front of Rip and asks him to hook up with her in the back seat of his truck.
The show jumps to the present, where Beth is waking up in bed. She must have been dreaming about what happened, so she goes into the kitchen and apologizes to Rip. She said, “This is a sort of general apology for everything in the past.” “Everything that happened before now. I’m sorry about that. I was really bad for you. It was awful. And if it helps, I was even harder on myself.” Rip tells her he’s happy, but she doesn’t believe him. “I took so much time away from us,” she says. “It still steals from us.”
We haven’t seen flashbacks to Beth and Rip’s teenage years in Yellowstone before, and we probably won’t see them for the last time either.
