Kevin Costner, who plays the lead in Yellowstone, is in the news right now because he is the star of TV’s most-watched drama. Taylor Sheridan’s popular neo-western is Costner’s first time as the star of a TV show. In it, he plays John Dutton, a fifth-generation rancher, and family patriarch. And the show has done better than the cast and crew ever could have imagined.
But for most of his career, Costner didn’t do anything to do with TV. He has been an A-list movie star and director since the early 1980s. In 1991, for the epic western Dances With Wolves, he even won two Oscars.
Kevin Costner, Who Starred In The Movie “Yellowstone,” Will “Never Forget” Oscar Night in 1991!
Dances With Wolves came out on November 9, 1990, and Costner both directed and starred in it. It was so well-liked that the movie was nominated for a whopping 12 Oscars, and it won seven.
The movie received awards for Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The award for Best Director went to Costner. And it was the first western to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards since Cimarron in 1931. Dances With Wolves was one of the most acclaimed movies of 1990.
“It’s easy for people to make fun of what we do by asking, “If it’s so important, why does no one remember who won last year?” The LA Times says that Costner said this when he and Jim Wilson picked up the Best Picture Oscar. “What happened here tonight is something I will never forget. My family will always remember. My friends who are Native American will never forget.”
Kevin Costner Says He “Didn’t Know How To Act” After Winning 2 Oscars!
Costner looked back on the night he won two Oscars in 1991 in a recent special edition of Entertainment Weekly about Yellowstone. He said he didn’t know there was a set way for winners to act.
“After I won, I didn’t even know how to act. People didn’t like that I didn’t go to any of the after-parties. I didn’t know that you had to. I thought that people who went there would know everyone there. Costner said, “I didn’t know you were supposed to make the rounds.”
The Yellowstone Actor Had “Many Treasured Memories” Of The Night He Received His Academy Award!
Even though Costner didn’t go to any of the parties, he still remembers that night in a special way. Before he went back to the Oscars in 2022 as a presenter, he posted a picture on Instagram of him holding two trophies on the night he won them, which was more than 30 years ago.
Costner wrote in the photo’s caption, “I have a lot of special memories of the Oscars, but nothing beats this night in 1991 with Dances With Wolves.” “I’m really excited to be giving an award at @theacademy Awards this weekend. Good luck to everyone nominated, and enjoy this great honor!”
Dances With Wolves is about a Civil War lieutenant named John Dunbar. He is sent to a remote western outpost, where he makes friends with wolves and meets a Lakota tribe. Fans can subscribe to HBO Max, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video to watch the epic western. Each Sunday, the Paramount Network shows new episodes of Yellowstone.
