Since the Yellowstone prequel 1923 is now streaming on Paramount+, many fans of the hugely popular franchise have started trying to figure out how John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner on Yellowstone, is related to Jacob Dutton, played by Harrison Ford in 1923.
Fans thought they had things figured out when Jacob’s nephew John Dutton Sr. was assumed to be John’s grandfather, but the character died in a tragic shootout in last week’s episode. So far, the prequel has only shown that John and his wife Emma have one son, Jack. This makes it hard to figure out the family tree, and it turns out that James Badge Dale, who plays John Dutton Sr., isn’t sure either.
Dale told The Hollywood Reporter that they need a flow chart to keep track of everything and that even he doesn’t fully understand the family tree, which could change depending on what Taylor Sheridan has planned for the show.
“I don’t know what tree it is. We need a list of steps. Dale said, “I’ve seen them online when people tried to make them.” “I have no idea if those are true or not. The thing is, this is all Taylor’s world. We could be saying or thinking one thing, and Taylor could decide to do something else. We’d be watching 1942 and notice that it’s a little different, and he’d change it up.
Could Spencer Be John Dutton’s Grandfather?
Spencer Dutton could be John Dutton’s grandfather, but it’s not a sure thing. At the end of the most recent episode of 1923, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) wrote to Spencer in Africa to tell him that his brother had died and that it was likely that his uncle would die soon.
She also told him that he needed to come home. Since Jack’s fiancee was also seriously hurt (she was shot in the stomach), it seems likely that the next generation of Duttons will come from Spencer and his new girlfriend, Alex. Their son might be named John after Spencer’s brother, who was killed in the shooting.
What is 1923 About?
In the next part of the Dutton family’s origin story, which takes place in 1923, Jacob (Ford) and Cara Dutton will lead a new generation of Duttons (Mirren). The series will look at the early 20th century when the mountain west was hit by pandemics, a long drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression. The Dutton family lived there at the time.
