Harrison Ford is putting together a family tree for the Duttons to figure out how “1923” led to “Yellowstone.”
Taylor Sheridan made the Paramount+ cinematic universe, which has led to many spin-offs, including the prequel series “1893.” James Badge Dale, who plays Ford’s co-star, said that the cast of “1923” has tried to figure out all of John Dutton’s (played by Kevin Costner) relatives. [Editor’s note: The story below gives away things that happen in “1923.”]
“This was always the joke. Harrison and I would say, “I think we’re related, but I’m not sure how.” Dale told The Hollywood Reporter that their characters’ ancestors can be found in Costner’s role. “A flow chart is what we all need.”
“I don’t know the tree,” Dale said next. I’ve seen people’s attempts to make flowcharts online. I have no idea if those are true or not. Here’s the thing, though: this is Taylor Sheridan’s world. We could be saying or thinking one thing, and Taylor could decide to do something else. When we watch “1923,” we’ll notice that it’s a little different, and he’ll change it.”
Audie Rick played John Sr. in the prequel “1893,” but Dale didn’t see it until about halfway through the filming of “1923.” Even though John Sr. was shot and killed in a shocking turn of events, that doesn’t mean that he’s done with the Yellowstone world.
“John Dutton Sr. is a big part of this story, in my opinion. I don’t know what Taylor has planned from 1883 to 1923,” Dale added. “What if he calls? Okay, I’ll be there right away. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to work with this crew and cast, especially Harrison and Helen, but mostly Harrison. Not many movie stars are left. This piece of writing is epic. I’m glad I was a part of it.”
Ford told IndieWire in the past that he watched “A Lot” of “Yellowstone” to prepare for his role as a member of the Dutton family. “The same people worked on this, so it has a lot of the same goals. But this is a different time, so the atmosphere is very different,” Ford said.
John Dutton, played by Costner, will keep ruling in “Yellowstone” Season 5, which will air in the summer of 2023.
