We thought those awful sounds were recognizable!
The first episode of The Last of Us on HBO has been released into the wild. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t read this article until you have. The first is that there aren’t any Clickers in the first episode, but the actors who made the monsters’ noises in the games are back to do the same thing for the show.
On Twitter, Naughty Dog Info confirmed that this was indeed the case. Also, if you didn’t know or hadn’t noticed while playing the games, not all Clickers sound the same. Both male and female Clickers have different voices and sound different. Misty Lee voices the women who get infected and live long enough to become Clickers, while Phillip Kovats does the same for the men.
It seems strange to talk about Clickers in terms of “Voice.” People who have played the games and heard Clickers in trailers for the show might have thought that the unique sounds they make come from some kind of twisted animal sounds. In no way. Lee and Kovats were given the hard task of making Clickers sound even scarier than they look. They did a great job of it. Given how scary they look, it seems like an impossible task.

The show’s trailers and first episode have already shown a lot that will take people who have played the games right back into that world. But besides that moment in episode 1 that would have broken even the hardest heart in two, it’s possible that the noise the Clickers make was what brought players back to the games more than anything else. It absolutely froze my blood when I heard it in the teaser and again at the end of the first episode.
Most of the roles have been changed for the show, but Lee and Kovats aren’t the only ones from the games who are back. Marlene was played by Merle Dandridge in The Last of Us, and she has played the role again.
