Dewey Riley died in Scream 2022, which was a surprise since he had survived so many other Ghostface killings, but the way he died was set up by a joke in Scream 2. One of the funniest things about the Scream movies is that the main characters never die.
Before Scream 2022, Sidney, Gale, and Dewey all survived stab wounds, gunshots, and other brutal injuries that would have killed anyone in real life. The ability of Scream’s legacy characters to defy death made them seem almost supernatural, so it seemed like none of the main characters could ever be killed by Ghostface for real.
Does Sidney Die in Scream 5?
Even though Randy Meeks, a character from Scream who came back in Scream 2, and Judy Hicks, a character from Scream 4, both died in Scream 2022, it’s not often that characters from more than one film are killed off. Sidney Prescott seems like she will never die, so Scream 2022 decided to kill off another popular character, Dewey Riley.
As a last stand against Ghostface, Dewey went back into the hospital to kill Mikey Madison’s Scream 2022 killer Amber Freeman himself. However, Amber came back to life and stabbed Dewey enough times to make it clear that he had died. Dewey’s death was shocking because he had miraculously come back to life so many times. However, a joke in Scream 2 explained why he could no longer come back to life.
At the end of Scream 2, Cotton Weary came just in time to save Sidney from Mrs. Loomis. Gale Weathers also showed herself to be alive after being shot. Cotton made a joke about Gale having “more lives than a cat” when he saw that Gale was standing up and didn’t look too hurt.
This line seemed to predict how long the main characters of Scream would live, since Dewey Riley said in Scream 2022, just before he died, that he had been stabbed nine times, which is the number of mythical lives that cats are said to have. In a perfect set-up for the joke in Scream 2, Dewey Riley died after being stabbed for the tenth time. This shows that Scream characters don’t live as long as the legend says cats do.

If Dewey’s death being related to Cotton’s complaint about having nine lives is any indication of what will happen to the other characters in Scream, Sidney and Gale’s stories may soon end if they keep fighting off Ghostface killers. In Scream 1996, Sidney was stabbed once. In Scream 2, she was not hurt. In Scream 3, she was shot three times while wearing a bulletproof vest.
In Scream 4, she was stabbed twice. And at the end of Scream 2022, she was stabbed once. Sidney has been stabbed four times so far, which means she has five more before she meets the same end as Dewey. In the Scream movies, Gale has been shot twice and stabbed once, so Courteney Cox’s character still has a few wounds to heal before she dies.
Cotton Weary’s joke about Gale having more lives than a cat may have been a sign for Dewey, but it’s still important because it shows that Sidney and Gale aren’t as strong as the Scream movies make them seem. Sidney and Gale were not the only ones who made it through Scream 2022. Sam and Tara Carpenter, Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin, and a surprising number of other characters did as well.
If the new Scream characters follow the same survival rule that was teased, Tara may die soon, since she was stabbed seven times in the first scene. Even if the joke in Scream 2 wasn’t meant to foreshadow Dewey’s death in Scream 2022, it shows that the oddly supernatural ability of the original characters to stay alive doesn’t last forever.
