Netflix has confirmed that there will be a second season of The Empress, but we still don’t know when it will come out.
The popular series took us back to 1854 when a rebellious princess married Emperor Franz Joseph and became Empress of Austria. At the Viennese court, she became involved in politics.
The ups and downs (mostly downs) of the young “Sisi” (or “Sissi,” depending on who you ask life)’s in the heart of the Habsburg empire has been a popular topic in Austrian and German history for a long time.
What do you know? It has been a huge success for the network, and not just in countries where people speak German. After all, lavish period dramas with a royal theme tend to do well for Netflix. Just ask Bridgerton or The Crown.
After that surprising cliffhanger, there’s a lot to think about. A quick look through some history books should also help. What can we expect from the next season, and when can we expect it?
Here is everything known about season two of The Empress.
The Empress Season 2: Potential Release Date
Rejoice! The Empress was good enough to get another season. The Deadline Says that it has been ordered and is in the pre-production stage. Like most Netflix shows, its return depended on how many people watched it, so enough people clicked “next episode” to make it happen.
In a statement, the show’s creator, Katharina Eyssen, said, “I am so grateful that our series was able to reach so many different people in Germany and all over the world.”
“Elisabeth’s life is a story about the power of love, but also about having the courage to be different and having hope for a better future, which is exactly what we need right now. That’s why we’re so glad we can keep telling this exciting story.”
Katja Hofem, Vice President of Content for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH) at Netflix, said: “It’s great to see that our version of this well-known historical figure has sparked so much interest and excitement in so many people. It shows that people like Elisabeth and want to see more of her.”
If production starts right away, we might not get new episodes until the end of 2023, but 2024 seems more likely.
In the meantime, fans of the show can read Gigi Griffis’s book with the same name, which was based on Eyssen’s scripts.
Griffis told Tudum that the book gives a better idea of what is “going on in that person’s head.” Onscreen, “we see longing glances” and “where bodies are placed.”

The Empress Season 2: Cast Speculation
Devrim Lingnau will be back to play Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, also known as Sisi or Sissi. This is a fact. What would The Empress be without…The Empress?
Philip Froissart will play Emperor Franz Joseph, Melika Foroutan will play Archduchess Sophie, Johannes Nussbaum will play Archduke Maximilian, Jordis Triebel will play Princess Ludovika, and Almila Bagriacik will play Countess Leontine von Apafi.
As always, there is also a chance that some new people will join.
The Empress Season 2: Plot Speculation
At the end of The Empress, Elisabeth is locked up inside the palace walls because she broke royal rules (showed kindness) when she gave her shoes to a young girl in need at the iron foundry. Elisabeth gives up on the idea that anything will be done to help the poor. She gives in to despair and starts partying with Franz’s brother Maximillian, which hurts her reputation even more.
Archduchess Sophie was fed up with the rebellious Empress, so she suggested that Elisabeth go back to her home in Bavaria. Franz agreed, even though he had some harsh words with his wife and accused her of hanging out with his brother.
But before Franz tells Elisabeth to leave, she finds out she is finally pregnant. The Empress is very sad, but she doesn’t tell her husband the bad news.
By the time Elisabeth is ready to leave, a large group of angry people who had been gathering at the palace gates to protest the Emperor has blocked the entire exit. The guards want to turn the carriage around, but Elisabeth wants the gates to be opened.
As Franz and Sophia look on, the Empress reaches out to the crowd and says, “I see you.” She then tells them she is pregnant. Will the people like what she does? Can she let Franz go? Sophie is pregnant, so what plans does she have for her?
Well, we do know that the Archduchess will continue to make Elisabeth’s life miserable inside the palace walls as long as the show stays true to the real story. Ten months after she married the Duke, the Empress had her first child, a daughter named Archduchess Sophie of Austria.
Without Elisabeth’s permission, the older Archduchess gave the baby her own name and took full parental responsibility. Elisabeth was not allowed to care for or breastfeed her own child. A year later, Elisabeth had another daughter, and Sophie is said to have written a mean pamphlet against her daughter-in-law for not having a son to be king.
Since it’s been given the go-ahead, we can expect to learn more about all of this in season two.
