Iconic Italian horror director Dario Argento and punk godfather Iggy Pop have launched a crowdfunding campaign for Argento’s next film The Sandman.
The Canadian-German production is hoping to raise $250,000 via Indiegogo for the upcoming flick about a serial killer called the Sandman, played by Pop.
Producer Daniela Tully wrote the script, which has been called “a contemporary thriller set in the 21st century with primal roots stemming from the dark forests of Germany”. The film is said to include references to Argento classics like Suspiria and Deep Red and Dario describes the upcoming production as a culmination or tribute to his entire life’s work.
According to the film’s description: “The Sandman tells the story of Nathan, a young student in the city who struggles to forget his childhood trauma at the hands of the serial killer dubbed ‘The Sandman’. Nathan killed The Sandman (Iggy Pop) years ago, on Christmas Eve, after he witnessed the murder of his mother… until he sees the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the way dying at the hands of that same masked killer. This brutal murder plunges Nathan into an odyssey into the night country of his past, his dreams… and the buried secrets of The Sandman. Christmas is coming, and so is The Sandman.”
In a press release, Argento said: “I was thrilled to read the script, because I recognized right away, this one was written for me. I’m so excited that for the first time in my career, I will be able to involve my fans so early in the process and have them play an integral role in my next film. Also, working with Iggy Pop is amazing! Such an interesting and intense personality! I would not even simply say ‘actor,’ that does not cover it. I would rather say ‘a unique presence!'”
Iggy has said: “I have long been thrilled and fascinated by the amazing films of Mr. Argento, all of which are master works. Yes, and also compellingly strange, beautiful, and full of relentless terror. If I could play the Sandman for him it would make my life complete. I hope I have not just written my own epitaph.”
Accordingly, the film will be scored by Claudio Simonetti of the masterful Goblin, who have collaborated with Argento for many of his features.
Producers are offering rewards for funders, including set tours and the opportunity to play someone who gets killed in the film.
