Yes. High Definition Vinyl is now a thing. This new style of vinyl record will still play on normal record players and will have 30 percent more playing time.
Revolutionary High Definition Vinyl Technology Unveiled to Music Lovers
A European patent filing described a vinyl record that will have higher audio fidelity, longer playing times and louder volume than standard records. The CEO of Rebeat Innovation received $4.8 million in funding for the initiative and promised that the “HD Vinyl” could hit stores as early as 2019.
The HD vinyl is created by converting audio digitally to a 3D topographic map then lasers inscribe the map onto the stamper (the part that prints the grooves onto the vinyl). This supposedly allows the records to loose less audio information.
Rebeat Innovation will present the first test stampers at the Making Vinyl conference in Detroit with hopes of releasing the first HD vinyl in store by summer 2019.
